The event previously announced as the 21st Merdeka Chess Festival 2026 will now be known as the 21st Malaysian Chess Festival 2026 . This name has a special place in our history — the tournament was known as the Malaysian Chess Festival for its first 20 editions, and returning to that name reflects the event's identity as Malaysia's premier, longest-running international open chess festival. The brief use of "Merdeka" in earlier promotional materials was not the intended long-term name, and we thank the community for their understanding as we finalize this transition.
