ASIAN AMATEUR 2011 - Organizing Committee and Updates

With less than 3 more weeks to before the closing date of the ASIAN AMATEUR OPEN and WOMEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011, the organizing committee has began to receive enquiries and entries, mostly from local enthusiasts who are interested to take part in this event.

In most previous International events held in Malaysia that are sanctioned by FIDE or ACF, the events are open to all players including GM and IM thereby limiting the opportunity for many “average” players – local or otherwise, from shining on an international platform. With limitation of FIDE rating entry ceiling at less than 2100, the ASIAN Amateur provides a realistic opportunity for many Malaysians to aim at becoming the best Amateur player in ASIA, a moment of glory for local players to shine on a continental level. With a total prize fund of more than RM20,000 including additional prizes allocated the top Unrated and Women players playing in the event, it is also one of the more lucrative prize fund ever offered for the average players to hit our shores.

For Malaysians, this will be the first International event being held in Malaysia after long break, the last event being the Zone championship cycle held in 2006 at Cititel Express Hotel. This Amateur event is also being managed and handled by a mix of new and old faces within the Malaysian chess community under the leadership of MCF President, Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib. The organizing committee for the event is:

Adviser
Tuan Haji Ibrahim Abu Bakar

Organizing Chairman
Mr. Mohd Zuhri Abdullah

MCF Secretary
Mr. Gregory Lau Beng Hock

Organizing Secretary
Mr. Najib Abdul Wahab

Committee Members
Mr Azman HIsham Che Doi
Mr. Ghazalie Abdullah

Official Venue for the event shall be the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail. Additional information on the available hotels and accommodation around the playing will be made available within the next few days. For general inquiries and information about the event, including suggestions and recommendations for places to stay, interested parties and individuals can contact the organizing secretary, Mr. Najib Abdul Wahab at +6016 338 2542 or email najib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com
