Table 1. IM Mas is now ranked 8th with 3 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss. Meets IM Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy in the final 9th round tomorrow.

In round 7, IM Mas lost his first game of the tournament against GM Dao Thien Hai, Vietnam (2524) who is seeded second in the tournament. While in round 8, he won against WIM Le Kieu Thien Kim giving IM Mas five full points after eight rounds and is now ranked 8th overall.

image  Table 2. IM Lim Yee Weng is now ranked 15th with 3 wins, 3 draws and 2 loss. He will meet IM Duong The Anh, Vietnam (2426) in the final 9th round tomorrow.

IM Lim Yee Weng met FM F D Howard, Singapore (2230) and drew the 7th round game, while winning against FM Chan WX Timothy, Singapore (2384) in the 8th round game. If he can further improve his seeding in the ninth round tomorrow against IM Duong of Vietnam, it will help push his rating higher. At the moment his tournament performance is at 2256, which is lower than that of his international rating of 2336.

Muhd Izz Saifudin Crowned Champion Of First Saturday Classical Chess 2009

Abdullah simply could not win the last game when it mattered and the young talented Muhd Izz Saifuddin seized the oppportunity as black and crowned as Champion of the First Saturday Classical Chess December 2009.

Even Muhd Nabil, Jax Tham and the Azman Hisham’s siblings, Nur Nabila and Nur Najiha are all left wondering what happened to their own fortunes, simply out-gunned and out-maneuvred by Muhd Izz Saifuddin.

Fantastic, close and exciting finish to the six round Classical Chess organised by Excel Chess Academy. Next stop for the juniors are the National Juniors Championship from 16-20th December 2009 at Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur. If this Classical Chess tournament is a mirror of what is to come, I am sure chess fans and enthusiasts have plenty of action and slug-fest waiting for them, then!

Congratulations to all winners, participating players for the wonderful competition to this Classical Chess series and, of course, to the organiser, arbiter and player of the event, Jax Tham, owner of Excel Chess Academy! Well done!

Muhd Izz Takes Over The Lead After Round 5 In The First Saturday Classical Chess 2009

Today at the Excel Chess Academy, the competition is so fierce, the lead has been constantly changing every round of play. And the new leader after the fifth round of play is Muhd Izz Saifuddin with 4.5 points from five rounds of play in the First Saturday Classical Chess December 2009.
This is a six round tournament using the Classical Chess clock time of 90 minutes + 30 second increment. This is the most competitive tournament yet that I have witnessed held at the Excel Chess Academy with friendly competition among the fantastic group of young, keen chess players participating in this First Saturday tournament.
Following close behind is Abdullah and Yeap at 4.0 points and Muhd Syakir, Muhd Nabil Azman, Wong Jiawen and Low Jun Jian are all at 3.5 points. Any slip-ups by the current leader will cost him the winner’s rostrum for the First Saturday Classical Chess 2009.
Muhd Izz Saifuddin will meet Abdullah Che Hassan in the top of the board clash and will definitely decide the champion of the First Saturday Classical Chess December 2009. If it is a draw, the following group of talented young players at the back can just overtake this two players. Muhd Izz and Abdullah must both go for a win! Nothing less! Period! As always white has first mover advantage and Abdullah gets to play white. May the best player wins! Wish you luck, guys!

Promotion to a Knight- Svidler Swindled!!

In the FIDE World Cup Quarterfinals between Svidler and Malakhov,     Svidler sacrificed material for an attack but malakhov just took everything for something nice at the end of a long variation.The position is still good for White with a possible mate in 6!!

BUT ITS BLACK’S MOVE

image

Black plays dxe1(N) + and Svidler resigned. The readers can easily spot a mate in 5!! (Kamaluddin Yusof will be proud of this!!)

so close

MANILA -- Wesley So’s astounding run in the 2009 World Chess Cup came to an end after the Filipino grandmaster lost his playoff match against Russian GM Vladimir Malakhov in the fourth round of the competition in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
So (ELO 2640), who twice held Malakhov (ELO 2706) to a draw, yielded to the Russian GM in three straight tie-break matches of rapid chess.
The Bacoor-based chess player yielded to the 22nd-seeded Russian in 55 moves using the black pieces during their first-tie break match. This was followed by another win by Malakhov after 61 moves in the second match.
The 59th-seed So tried to fight back in the third game but Malakhov took advantage of the momentum to win the round in 32 moves.
The score was 4-1 in favor of the Russian.
Thus ended So’s campaign in this year’s World Chess Cup, which saw him winning over two chess heavyweights on his way to the fourth round.
Prior to facing Malakhov, So shocked Chess Cup defending champion super GM Gata Kamsky of the US in Round 3. He also pulled the rug from under World No. 12 GM Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in Round 2.
So, who is already assured of $30,000prize money for reaching Round 4, also defeated GM Gadir Guseinov of Azerbaijan in Round 1.
Best showing for RPSo’s fourth-round finish is arguably the country’s best showing in World Chess Cup history, surpassing the efforts of his compatriots, GMs Rogelio Antonio Jr. and Mark Paragua.
Antonio and Paragua reached the second round of the competition.
GM Eugene Torre, Asia’s first GM, reached the quarterfinal stage under a different elimination format.
So earlier said he will be working to achieve super GM status by breaking the 2700 ELO barrier.
"I dream that sooner or later, I will come to the magical point 2700. I don't know how much time I will need for that," he said.

If his strength in chess is nurtured and groomed further, there is no doubt that Li Tian has the potential to become a future Malaysian GrandMaster in chess. A dream for most chess players in Malaysia to achieve.

Malaysian Masters – organiser’s point of view

A few important points of view from the perspective of the organisers' of the Malaysian Masters 2009 are as follows:-

1. To promote chess- make it a viable sports and attractive to be Malaysian champion;
2. A match of this nature, promotes top players and encourages them to play their best;
